for real. I always played a human swordsman for many years, fun but weak compared to a primary caster. my friends all got together to explore new ideas in role playing and thought I should try playing an elf, a cleric and an archer. Not willing to wait 3 campaigns to get back to my beloved swordsman I decided to play an elf cleric archer, that was right when 3.5 started. That damn game played level 1 all the way to epic level 24...took over 4 years. A year or so into the game a new player decided to join and make an archer. They told him, "Cleric has that covered" - but he insisted because he thought fighter feats and multi-shot and some Ranger stuff would make him a better archer than my standard, run of the mill, no frills cleric, right out of the phb box with no extra cheese. He was sadly mistaken. That character kicked major ass and was voted the party leader, not just for leadership but also for major firepower. The concept is simple really, for every arrow a cleric fires...it is one less spell he didn't cast in combat, and a cleric can self-buff, plus magic up his own arms and armor. It was ridiculous.

He's a cleric. That's his official class. Everyone calls him Priest and not Paladin; at least not yet. He's still a normal Priest/Cleric at this point of the story and not Paladin.

He's totally a cleric with some wizard levels.

I also loved that he doesn't like most of ruler character in animes lately that would instantly be nice and flattered the MC after their powerful deeds.
It shows some realism and he definitely being straightforward with his intentions. I'm interesting to see where it would go afterwards tho I know he definitely wouldn't even get to scratch will xD

Why the prince is hostile to him?

He's not being hostile from what I can see he just doesn't inherently trust Will just for this feat and that's actually very reasonable.

Keep in mind the gov is spread so thin they can't even protect this city properly let alone the outskirts.
In this situation a Wyvern attacks the city. A party overpowers it, then the prince learns it's not a powerful party that entered the city but just two powerful individuals that did the brawn of four. It's very much possible the Wyvern was not subdued out of the goodness of their heart.

Now in addition to being a potential threat through his individual ability he's asking for permission of organising greater man power each with high abilities. There's tons of possible ulterior motives you can have to do this and use 'this villages are under threat' as a pretense.

Yeah exactly, with a private army strong enough to drive out the demons he could easily overthrow the prince in a heartbeat

Just to add, the prince recognized that Will has the etiquette of a noble. It also does not help that Will requested him not to ask for his Origins. So from the Prince's perspective, he might come from a rival faction of sorts.

It could be the perfect excuse to slowly set up your own territory, especially with Will’s power.
